MY LIFE IN A PARAGRAPH

I am an American living in Allerød. In 2014, I met a Danish man in a pirate bar in the middle of the Nevada desert. It was the month of September. In October, we met again in Mexico, where I was to photograph a wedding. In November, I quit my job as a press photographer and sold my house. In December I was at Kastrup Airport, with my two dogs and 4 suitcases. In March 2015, we got married, and two years later, our little daughter was born.

EXPERIENCED PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER

I have always loved telling stories, but I didn’t enjoy writing. During my training as a journalist, I quickly found out that my passion and abilities were intertwined with my camera. I’m an introvert and it’s hard for me to start a conversation. But put a camera in my hands, and shyness and confidence melt away. I focus on the here and now and try to create the perfect image.

My career started as a photojournalist for the Reno Gazette-Journal, where I took pictures of news, sports, fashion, food and politics. Yes, even presidents. I’ve seen the worst in people and the best in people. I have seen people take their last breath on the cement right in front of me. I have seen forest fires tear through entire communities and I have seen neighbors help each other and rebuild their lives.

I’ve been featured in the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, San Francisco Chronicle, Women’s World, and Washington Post. I feel privileged to witness many historical events, but I feel the same privilege when a couple chooses me to document their big day, or their child taking their first steps.

WHEN WE TAKE PICTURES TOGETHER

My previous career as a photojournalist was full of adventure. When I sit and think about the weddings that had the best results, with the funniest and happiest clients, they all have something in common – adventures.

The real magic happens when the bride and groom throw the caution out the window and do not worry about getting to dinner clean. They are ready to surrender to the weather (which in Denmark is completely insane and always changing, even from minute to minute.)

When the bride decides that running in the sea would be a good idea for the pictures, I am there to support and cheer on her. When she says, “I do not care if it rains down with rain outside, I do not want to compromise on my vision.” I’m there to support and cheer on her. Because the more adventurous you are on your wedding day, the more stories you have to tell later.

We go on these adventures together, but in typical photojournalistic style, I like being an observer. I work hard so you get to remember your wedding day. The great adventure you take on in your new life together, surrounded by friends and family. That you remember how you played in the rain together. How your father got tears in his eyes when he welcomed your partner to the family. How you danced until late at night. These are the memories you need to remember from your day, not the logistics of taking photos.

Fun Facts

Musicals

I love Broadway musicals. My parents raised me with them. I usually see or listen to them when I edit photos. Right now, Hamilton is on repeat while my three daughter sings It's a Hard Knock Life.

Traditions

I like traditions a lot. Every year I make American Thanksgiving Dinner, with everything that comes with it. Turkey, mashed potatoes, brown sauce, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes with marshmallows and apple pie. Many Danes thought that it sounds disgusting with marshmallows on sweet potatoes. But as soon as they taste it, it becomes their favorite dish. Trust me.

CREATIVE

I always have several projects in the air. I love being creative, sewing, painting, drawing and knitting (although I'm not good at it.) I also like Macramé, and home decor. I learned it all on Youtube.

THE GARDEN

If you can not find me, I am probably in the garden. I love growing flowers and am in the process of planing and replanning my garden. I am passionate about biodiversity, and even though my garden is not large, I work with what I have to help insects and amphibians in the garden. My daughter and I often explore the garden and name all the snails. (Ib is our favorite.)

BURNING MAN FESTIVAL

The pirate bar I met my husband in was at a festival called Burning Man. I have visited it for 14 years. That festival has given me a network around the world, it has taught me to build art, dance with hula hoops with fire in and now given me a family. If you do not know it then try to Google it.
